 JASNA - Atlanta Region Meetings

The featured Austen novel at the 2010 Austen Conference in Portland is Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen's send-up of the Gothic novels that were popular at the end of the 18th century.  Many JASNA local chapters around the U.S. and Canada are discussing this genre in prep for that conference.

The term 'gothic' was probably borrowed from the Gothic architecture that was popular in medieval times and frequently appeared in these novels.  Ancient, ruined castles with secret passages and histories of violence enhanced the spooky atmosphere of the written words.

The most famous example of Gothic revival architecture in Atlanta is Oglethorpe University, which is currently celebrating the 175th anniversary of its founding . Below is Lupton Hall, one of the buildings in the academic quadrangle.
